We’ve been sniffing out the latest style updates so that you can be the first to work the latest looks
SHIRTS
Last season: Checked
Now: Denim
>> Give your checks a rest – denim is king. Whether you’re layering over jersey dresses, doubling your denim or using as a beach cover-up, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one.
HAIR
Last season: Texture
Now: Twisted up-dos
>> A much simpler alternative to fiddly plaiting, twisting is half as taxing and twice as chic. And the best news?
Any shape goes. We saw loads of rope-like dos at shows, so wind it up tight and bend it back on itself. Our top tip is to finish it off with an equestrian-style black bow for the ultimate in high-society hair.
DRESSES
Last season: Graphic prints
Now: Rose prints
>> A summer wardrobe must-have, it’s time to crack out the floral dresses again. Now, go for romantic rose prints and a slick of red lippy for old-school glamour. Invest in vintage-looking prints. That’s your hot summer dates sorted, then.
DETAILING
Last season: Fringing
Now: Slashes
>> On the runway, frocks were channelling the ‘80s yet again - slashed across the chest, on the arms or simply cut away on the shoulders. To avoid body worries, opt for slashed leggings and layer with longer tunic tops, a leather jacket and heaps of tough-luxe jewellery. This is the fiercest look yet.
SUNGLASSES
Last season: Wayfarers
Now: Bug-eyed
>> Well, you can never have too many sunnies. Shades have been given the Jackie O treatment again, and big is back. Hiding those late-night-induced dark circles have never been so easy.
HEEL
Last season: Wedges
Now: Clogs
>> Yes, you really will be coveting a pair of clogs this spring. Thanks to Chanel, these wooden wonders now earn major style points – but the real bonus is that this time they come with a higher heel, balanced by a platform, so they’re really leg-lengthening. And did we mention they go with everything, from dresses to jeans? What’s not to love?
TOPS
Last season: Oversized ‘80s
Now: Cropped
>> Our trusty tees have been given the chop. Invest in these midriff flashers and if you don’t have a size zero figure, wear a slick tank underneath. Look to any ‘80s Madonna video for inspiration.
DENIM
Last season: Faded
Now: Double denim
>> This ‘90s fashion crime has gone full circle and is earning back its cool status. Doing double is a brave move, so to make it a bit easier on the eye, try mixing different denim shades and textures, then always break it up with a belt.
CLASSIC TREND
Last season: Military
Now: Nautical
>> Blue and white stripes, anchors and shells are once again doing the rounds, so look for nautical accessories. Moderation is key – to avoid looking like Popeye, wear just one piece at a time.
LIPS
Last season: Coral
Now: Lilac
>> Finally! A wearable purple lip we can all try. This frosted lilac lip is your new perfect-for-spring pout. It works now to update your LBD but it is also hot for summer to dress up denim. Skip the gloss to avoid looking too done – just one slick is all you need.
JEWELLERY
Last season: Chunky Silver
Now: Colour-injecting pieces
>> Kitsch, bright, ethnic-style beadwork is your new statement neckwear. Try one block colour or mix two or more at a time. There are fabric-coloured beads, coloured wood, plastic and glass on offer. Match with a floaty top, skirt or dress.
PRINTS
Last season: Geometric
Now: Stormy and hotchpotch
>> The catwalk was all about moody, cloudy distorted patterns in a murky watercolour wash. Pick blue, grey, black or purple – anything bruised looking. At the other end of the print spectrum are a mish-mash of crazy patterns in a patchwork style – killer prints ready to be flaunted.
EYES
Last season: Black eyeliner
Now: Two-toned smoky eye
>> More flattering than black but easier to wear than rainbow brights, say hello to jewel-toned peepers. Take two rich tonal colours, like deep purple and mauve, and blend together, lining your bottom lashline with the darker one.
GIRLIE TREND
Last season: Frills
Now: Innerwear as outerwear
>> Will we really be wearing a bra over our blouses a la Marc Jacobs? We don’t think so. Instead, mix girlie and boyish pieces together. A masculine shirt or jacket is the perfect partner for a feminine slip skirt. Lace looks most expensive in soft neutral colours. Brighten up by mixing with coloured silk and keep it cool with a sporty blazer. Finally, choose a dress with corset detailing – these magic lines create the illusion of curves, so are perfect for boyish figures.
BOLD TREND
Last season: Tribal
Now: Club Tropicana
>> Miami cocktail-coloured sequins and standout palm tree or parrot prints – the club Tropicana trend is fun and perfect for going out, especially during the summer. Choose from sequin tops, T-shirts and more, then accessorise with popping nails.
KHAKI
Last season: Utilitarian
Now: Glam
>> Khaki is the new surprise hue for summer. But fear not, it isn’t just about army jackets –khaki’s a fresh and versatile colour, working with all skin tones. No excuses girls, it’s time to go green.
