Barrai’s initiative will give the artists their first solo show only after two years – offering them time to create art that is true to their beliefs
The Fuschia Tree, a curated online gallery, has channeled the power of the internet to create a fresh, dynamic online space for emerging artists, design professionals, art lovers and art collectors to come together. And now, under the patronage of Anjaneya Foundation, the gallery is introducing an outstanding and unparalleled opportunity for emerging artists in India – The Fuschia Futures. “This is a path-breaking program that will give young artists an opportunity to showcase their works across the length and breadth of the country, spanning diverse genres,” says Chanda Chaudhary Barrai, the founder of The Fuschia Tree.
Conducted by the means of a competition, not far from an Indian Idol – only in this case for young artists, over 10,000 artworks have been received from 1,400 artists, all of whom range between the ages of 20-25, and have never been shown in any art show before. The entries were then narrowed down to a selection of the fabulous 10.
The winning art spans a variety of genres, from conceptual to abstract to the traditional — from Delhi-based Bara Babu Mahato’s fibreglass sculptures to the caricature-like characters by Gauri from Allahabad and pen-and-inks from Patna-based Rajesh Kumar Rajan. “We (our panel) were looking for artists who would move beyond formula, have the conviction to create something original and possess a strong creative voice,” says Barrai. The 10 final winners include seven artists, two photographers and a sculptor.
The panel of curators included eminent artists - Amal Ghosh, Nrupen Madhvani, and KS Radhakrishnan, and was supported by an eclectic panel of young art consultants and contemporary artists including Shailin Smith, Hemal Paliwal, Sanjeeta Dutta and Rahul Chowdhury. Barrai’s search for the unique and original voices and young talents has taken her across continents, to London and then to Hong Kong, where the gallery runs specific programs in emerging art markets to present and promote exceptional, yet undervalued art to collectors worldwide.
